Build a Node.js REST API Faster with an Express, TypeScript, and Prisma Starter

Starting a new backend project often means repeating the same setup: creating an Express server, configuring TypeScript, connecting a database, and adding middleware before you can focus on your actual product.

The Express TypeScript Prisma API Starter provides that foundation upfront, helping you spend more time building application-specific features instead of repeating initial backend setup.

This open-source boilerplate combines Express 5, TypeScript, Prisma ORM, and MongoDB in a reusable Node.js API project. It also includes examples for common backend utilities and optional features, while leaving application-specific models, authentication flows, and business logic for you to implement.

What Is Included in This Express and Prisma Boilerplate?

The starter provides a structured foundation for building a TypeScript backend API, including:

Express 5 and TypeScript for the HTTP server and typed application code.
Prisma ORM configured for MongoDB, including a sample request-log model.
Middleware examples for CORS, Helmet, rate limiting, cookies, and request logging.
Reusable utilities for JWTs, bcrypt, encryption, caching, and email.
Optional backend examples for file uploads, Socket.IO, and a scheduled self-request.
Development tooling including ESLint, Prettier, Husky, and npm scripts for building and testing.

The repository uses MongoDB-specific Prisma ObjectId fields. This means it is specifically designed as a MongoDB starter, rather than a database-agnostic Prisma template. Switching to PostgreSQL or another SQL database would require adapting the Prisma schema and related application code.

Getting Started

To run the starter, you need Node.js 20 or newer, npm, and a MongoDB database for Prisma-backed features.

First, clone the repository and install its dependencies:

npm install

Create your local environment file:

cp .env.example .env

If you're using Windows PowerShell:

Copy-Item .env.example .env

Next, set APP_DATABASE_URL to your MongoDB connection string.

You should also configure unique local values for the cookie, JWT, and encryption secrets.

Once the environment is configured, generate the Prisma Client, push the database schema, and start the development server:

npm run generate
npm run db:push
npm run dev

By default, the API listens on port 3000.

The root route is available at:

GET /

The versioned demo routes are available under:

/api/v1/demo

A Foundation, Not a Finished Application

This project is designed to be a boilerplate, not a complete application.

The included demo CRUD routes are placeholders. Requests to these routes return 501 Not Implemented until you connect the controllers to your own Prisma models and business logic.

The starter also does not provide finished authentication routes or request validation.

The included JWT, password-hashing, encryption, and email utilities should therefore be treated as building blocks, rather than a complete account or authentication system.

You are responsible for:

Defining your user model
Validating input
Implementing authentication
Enforcing authorization
Handling application errors appropriately
Writing tests for your application's requirements

This approach keeps the boilerplate flexible while leaving application-specific decisions to the developer.

Preparing the Starter for Your Project

After completing the initial setup, you can adapt the boilerplate to your application's requirements.

1. Define Your Data Model

Add the MongoDB models and relations required by your application to:

prisma/schema.prisma

Then regenerate the Prisma Client.

2. Implement Your API

Replace the demo handlers with your application-specific:

Routes
Controllers
Validation
Database operations
Business logic

3. Configure Access and Secrets

Set the allowed browser origins and use distinct, randomly generated production secrets.

Add authentication and authorization according to your application's requirements.

4. Review the Optional Examples

Review the optional examples carefully before enabling them.

The Socket.IO handlers are unauthenticated examples, so suitable checks should be added before exposing them.

The upload middleware keeps files in memory and has a 5 MB per-file limit with a 10-file limit. For production, consider persistent object storage and appropriate resource limits.

5. Plan Deployment and Scaling

Before deploying, configure HTTPS through your hosting platform or reverse proxy.

You should also configure logging and monitoring for your environment.

If you plan to scale Socket.IO across multiple processes, choose an appropriate Socket.IO adapter and deployment strategy.

In production mode, the server checks that the JWT, cookie, and encryption secrets are configured as distinct values of at least 32 characters.

This configuration check is useful, but it does not replace a complete security review or application-level protections.

Is This Node.js API Starter Right for You?

This starter is a good fit if you want an Express 5 TypeScript boilerplate for MongoDB and prefer Prisma for database access.

Its organized source structure and optional examples give you a starting point without forcing a specific application domain or authentication architecture.

However, this is not intended to be a ready-to-deploy product with every backend feature already implemented.

If your project requires:

Completed CRUD operations
Request validation
Authentication
Authorization
A SQL database schema

you should expect to build or adapt those parts yourself.

The goal of this boilerplate is simple: reduce repetitive backend setup while leaving the application's engineering decisions in your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the boilerplate use MongoDB or PostgreSQL?

It uses MongoDB.

The Prisma schema uses MongoDB-specific ObjectId fields, so using a SQL database would require corresponding schema and code changes.

Are the demo CRUD endpoints fully implemented?

No.

The /api/v1/demo endpoints are placeholders that return 501 Not Implemented.

You need to implement their controllers and add validation according to your application's requirements.

Does it include production-ready authentication?

No.

The project includes JWT and password-hashing utilities, but you need to build and test your own authentication and authorization flows.

Which Node.js version does it require?

The boilerplate requires Node.js 20 or newer.

Start Building Your API

If you're looking for a Node.js REST API boilerplate with Express, TypeScript, Prisma, and MongoDB, this project provides a structured foundation to start from.

Set up the project, configure your MongoDB connection, adapt the Prisma schema, replace the demo routes with your own application logic, and review the optional utilities before using them.

The goal is not to hide the engineering decisions behind a pre-built application. Instead, it gives you a clean starting point so you can focus on building the features your project actually needs.
